What is VCI Paper?

VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) Paper is a high-performance anti-corrosion packaging material engineered to protect bare metal surfaces from rust and oxidation during storage and transit. Manufactured using 100% virgin kraft paper that is fully impregnated with volatile corrosion inhibiting compounds, VCI paper releases an invisible protective vapor the moment it is sealed around a metal component.

These VCI molecules form a self-repairing, mono-molecular barrier directly on the metal surface — blocking moisture, oxygen, and chlorides from initiating the electrochemical corrosion reaction. Unlike traditional rust preventive oils, VCI paper provides completely dry, residue-free protection: parts wrapped in VCI paper can be removed and placed directly onto an assembly line or into service without any cleaning or degreasing.

How Does VCI Paper Work?

VCI paper protects metals through a three-stage electrochemical process:

  1. Vaporization: VCI compounds embedded in the kraft paper emit protective molecules into the enclosed airspace the moment the package is sealed.
  2. Adsorption: These vapor-phase molecules travel throughout the entire enclosed volume — reaching deep cavities, threaded holes, and hydraulic ports — and bond onto every exposed metal surface, forming an invisible layer just 1–2 molecules thick.
  3. Corrosion Circuit Disruption: This molecular shield repels water and acts as an electrical insulator, breaking the electrochemical reaction that drives rust. When the part is unwrapped, the VCI layer dissipates harmlessly within minutes.

2. Poly Coated Laminated VCI Paper
A premium, dual-layer product combining VCI-impregnated kraft with a polyethylene laminate. The poly coating provides an additional moisture and oil barrier, making this paper ideal for parts that may have residual machining coolant or are stored in high-humidity environments. Best for: Oily/greasy parts, ocean freight. GSM Range: 80–120 GSM.

3. VCI Crepe Paper
Creped (textured) kraft paper with VCI impregnation. The crepe texture gives this paper exceptional conformability and stretch, allowing it to wrap tightly around irregular, complex-shaped components without tearing. Widely used in the automotive sector for engine blocks. Best for: Complex-shaped parts. GSM Range: 130–150 GSM.

4. VCI HD Reinforced Paper
Heavy-duty VCI paper with embedded reinforcement fibers or scrim for maximum tear resistance and puncture protection. Designed for the defense and heavy engineering sectors where packaging must withstand rough handling, stacking loads, and prolonged multi-year storage. Best for: Military packaging, heavy machinery. How to Use VCI Paper Correctly

  1. Clean the metal surface. Remove dirt, oil, and machining debris. The cleaner the surface, the better the VCI adheres.
  2. Ensure the part is completely dry. Any trapped moisture reduces VCI effectiveness.
  3. Wrap the part fully. All metal surfaces must be covered. Allow 50 mm overlap at seams.
  4. Seal the package. Use tape or shrink-wrap to create a semi-enclosed environment. VCI works best in enclosed spaces.
  5. For stacked flat parts: Interleave one sheet of VCI paper between every metal sheet.
  6. Store properly. Keep wrapped parts between 5°C and 43°C. Avoid direct sunlight and floor contact.
