What is VCI Film?
VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) film is a specialised packaging material that protects metal from corrosion during storage and transit. It releases volatile molecules that settle on metal surfaces and form a protective layer, shielding them from the moisture, oxygen and other corrosive elements that cause oxidation. Available as rolls, bags and sheets, it suits a wide range of packaging needs and is used across automotive, aerospace, electronics and defence, wherever metal parts need long-term protection. How does VCI film work?
VCI film releases corrosion-inhibiting molecules into the air around the metal. These molecules adsorb onto every metal surface, including recesses and threads, and form a molecular layer that interrupts the electrochemical reactions that cause rust. The layer is self-replenishing, so protection continues even after the pack is opened and resealed. BENZ VCI film is non-toxic, residue-free and safe on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, keeping components in optimal condition through long storage and transport.
How to wrap VCI film on metal
Wrapping metal in VCI film is straightforward:
- Prepare the surface. Make sure the metal is clean and free of dirt, oils and other contaminants, which can reduce the film's effectiveness.
- Cut to size. Measure and cut the film to fit the part; it trims easily with scissors or a utility knife.
- Wrap the part. Cover the whole surface and keep the film snug to minimise air pockets.
- Seal the edges. With a bag or larger sheet, seal the edges with tape, heat sealing or VCI closures to keep moisture and air out.
How long does VCI film last?
Protection life depends on the film formulation, the storage conditions and the length of the journey, and typically ranges from several months to a few years.
